What is Hyperhidrosis?
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder that can cause a great deal of stress and embarrassment.
An estimated 3% of the British population suffers from excessive sweating of the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis) who have no related medical problems.
Hyperhidrosis tends to start in late adolescence and left untreated, will continue throughout life.
Sweating can be embarrassing. It stains clothes, can ruin relationships, complicates business, social interactions and erodes confidence.
What is the cause of Hyperhidrosis?
Although neurological, metabolic and other systemic diseases can sometimes cause Hyperhidrosis, most cases occur in people who are otherwise healthy. Heat and emotions may trigger Hyperhidrosis in some, but many who suffer from Hyperhidrosis sweat nearly all of their waking hours, regardless of their mood or the weather.
What is the treatment for Hyperhidrosis?
The normal approach to treating excessive sweating usually begins with various types of over-the-counter anti-perspirants. This is often followed by prescription strength antiperspirants containing aluminium chloride, however, some people find that they just cannot tolerate the side effects of aluminium chloride (irritation) and therefore have to take further medication (anti-inflammatory drugs) to counteract the side effects.
Botulinum Toxin A is an extremely effective solution to treating excessive sweating and normally lasts for 9-12 months. Botulinum Toxin A is often in the news as a cosmetic treatment for wrinkles. However, it has actually been used in many areas of medicine for some time, such as in the treatment of muscle spasms and certain migraines. It is commonly used in the treatment of excessive sweating.
