What Are Age Spots?

Age spots are the result of an excess production of melanin, or skin pigment. Doctors don’t always know why age spots develop.

Cause

Age spots are caused by an accumulation of a yellow pigment called lipofuscin due to aging of collagen producing cells. Age spots are caused by overactive pigment cells. Ultraviolet (UV) light accelerates the production of melanin. On the areas of skin that have had years of frequent and prolonged sun exposure, age spots appear when melanin becomes “clumped” or is produced in high concentrations.

Exposure to UV light without using a sunscreen and the use of commercial tanning beds also contributes to the development of age spots.

They are very common on the hands and face from middle age, a tell-tale a sign of increasing age.

Results from ACP

Electrolysis is a very effective solution for removal. Using a very fine electrolysis needle and diathermy (AC) current a tiny section of the age spot is lifted from the underlying tissue and the colour underneath is observed. If the exposed area is lighter in colour, removal can go ahead. If the pigment underneath is the same colour as the age spot itself, the pigment goes deep into the dermis and treatment will not be successful.

Initially it will look worse before it looks better. The healing process can take several weeks but once healing is complete there should be little or no evidence of the age spot.
