MicroSCLEROTHERAPY

Average price per session £140

Microsclerotherapy is a treatment for small leg veins under the skin, often referred to as ‘spider veins’ or ‘small veins’. They are more visible in patients with pale skin.

The exact cause is not known but is often related to varicose veins.

It is important that any underlying conditions are treated before treating the veins with microsclerotherapy.

What does the procedure involve?

The thread veins are injected with a sclerosant called Fibrovein™ through a very small needle. This damages the vein wall and is absorbed by the body over the next few weeks. Compression stockings will need to be worn for 3 days following treatment 24/7. The legs will look bruised for a few weeks until the veins are absorbed.

Does it hurt?

This is not a painful procedure. The injections are very superficial and made with a tiny needle. Some patients have likened the feeling to a nettle sting.

How many treatments will I need?

This can depend on the individual response to treatment and the extent of the thread veins. It is best to budget for up to 4 treatments. It is possible to get an excellent result after one
treatment.

What will my legs look like after treatment?

The injection will initially cause some redness and welts, like insect bites. When you remove the stockings your legs will probably look bruised and the veins often look worse before they look better. The veins are darker at this stage. The appearance improves noticeably by day 10-14, and will continue to improve thereafter. The full result of the treatment session will be apparent by about 12-16 weeks, although there is a huge variation in time of response to treatment. A few patients may experience brown staining which may take a few months to clear.

Will the thread veins come back?

You are likely to develop more thread veins as it’s possible there is a weakness in this area and may need top up treatments every 2-3 years, although the same treated veins are extremely unlikely to reappear. The price depends on the number of veins treated. A final price will be given at consultation.
